Botox is a medical treatment based on applying botulinum toxin type A in small doses to the facial muscles. It relaxes the muscles of expression in a controlled way, softening existing lines and preventing new ones from forming. It is the most widely used medical aesthetic treatment in the world and one of the most predictable when applied by a practitioner with aesthetic judgement.

Frown lines. The two vertical lines between the brows, the ones that give a permanently cross expression even when you are perfectly calm. It is the most commonly asked-about area.
Forehead. The horizontal lines that appear when you raise your eyebrows. Judgement matters here more than anywhere else: over-relaxing leaves an expressionless forehead and can drop the brow.
Crow’s feet. The outer corner of the eye, where the skin is thin and lines appear early.
There are less well-known indications — lifting the tail of the brow, lines on the upper lip, jaw tension — which are assessed case by case and are not appropriate for everyone.
1. Assessment in movement. Nothing is decided on a face at rest: you are asked to make expressions so we can see which muscle does what. That is what determines the points and the doses, which are never the same in two people.
2. Cleansing and marking of the injection points.
3. Application. Microinjections with a very fine needle at the marked points. It is one of the quickest and best-tolerated techniques in facial aesthetic medicine.
4. Guidance for the hours that follow. This is explained at the end of the session: there are specific instructions about not rubbing the area, avoiding intense heat and not lying down straight away.
5. Review. The effect is not immediate: it develops gradually over the following days, which is why the result is assessed after that phase and not on the same day.
Botulinum toxin is the same everywhere. What changes the result is where it goes, how much, and with what reading of the face. A good treatment does not show: you see a rested face, not a still one.

Botulinum toxin temporarily blocks the nerve signal that activates the muscles of expression in the treated area. The muscle relaxes, the skin over it smooths out and expression lines are reduced or disappear. The effect is local and reversible — it does not affect sensation or untreated muscles.
The treatment takes between 15 and 30 minutes. It is applied with very fine needles directly on the muscle points defined in the prior assessment. No anaesthetic is needed. Normal activities can be resumed immediately, with only a few recommendations for the first few hours.
The effect of botox is not immediate. The first changes begin to show between 3 and 7 days after application. The final result settles at around 14 days, at which point a review can be carried out to adjust it if needed.
The effect of botox usually lasts between 4 and 6 months, depending on each patient’s metabolism, the area treated and the dose applied. With regular, correctly dosed treatments, many patients find the muscle relaxes progressively and the effect lasts longer over time.
Botox is not indicated during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or in patients with certain neuromuscular conditions. A prior assessment with the doctor is essential.
