Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is a facial aesthetic medicine treatment that restores volume, corrects folds and defines the contours of the face gradually and reversibly. It is applied to the lips, cheekbones, chin, jawline or as a full-face treatment, always after a medical assessment that determines the area, the quantity and the type of product. Available at …

What hyaluronic acid is and what it is for

Hyaluronic acid is a substance the body produces naturally and which is found in the skin, where it retains water and maintains the volume and hydration of the tissues. Over the years its concentration falls, and with it come loss of volume in the cheekbones and lips, sagging of the lower third of the face and deepening folds.

In aesthetic medicine we use hyaluronic acid of non-animal origin, biocompatible and resorbable, injected into the appropriate plane of each area with a needle or a cannula. Depending on its density, a product may give structural support in the cheekbone or jaw, define and hydrate the lip, or treat fine, delicate areas such as the tear trough. That is why there is no single hyaluronic acid treatment: there is a different indication for each face, established at the prior medical consultation.

Hyaluronic acid is one of the facial aesthetic medicine treatments at Alta Armonía in El Albir. It is often planned alongside techniques that work on the quality of the skin rather than volume, such as SkinBooster or Dermapen. What is appropriate for each face, and in what order, is decided at the first consultation.

Which areas are treated

Lips. Hydration, definition of the border or added volume, depending on what you are looking for. Defining is not the same as augmenting, and it is worth saying so in the consultation.

Cheekbones and the mid-face. Restoring the volume lost there over the years supports the rest of the face: much of what reads as a «tired face» comes from a descended mid-face.

Chin and jawline. Defining the jawline and projecting the chin changes the profile without touching anything else.

Folds. The nasolabial fold and the marionette lines, which are what age the expression most at rest.

In many cases the plan is not a single area: the face works as a whole, and treating only the most visible symptom usually gives an unbalanced result. Which areas, in what order and in what quantity is decided at the assessment.

The session, step by step

1. Assessment and plan. The structure of the face is studied as a whole and we define what will and will not be treated. Also what to expect: a misplaced expectation is behind almost every disappointment.

2. Cleansing and marking. Make-up is removed, the area is disinfected and the entry points are marked.

3. Application. With a needle or a cannula depending on the area. Most products contain anaesthetic in their composition, and a topical anaesthetic can also be applied beforehand.

4. Afterwards. Some swelling in the first 24 to 48 hours is normal, and in the lips it is to be expected. A small bruise may appear at an entry point.

The final result is not assessed on the same day, but once the swelling has fully settled. The schedule and the review are set at the first consultation.

All of this is carried out at Alta Armonía, a medical aesthetic centre in El Albir, under healthcare supervision.

Why choose hyaluronic acid at Alta Armonía

The prior medical assessment studies proportions, support points and priorities before injecting anything. The aim is a harmonious, natural result, not filling for the sake of filling.

Hyaluronic acid is resorbable and, if necessary, can be reversed with hyaluronidase. It is one of the reasons it is considered a treatment with a wide safety margin when applied by healthcare professionals.

The effect on volume is visible from the session itself, and the final result settles over the following days, as the product integrates into the tissue and the initial swelling subsides.

At Alta Armonía the injection is carried out by qualified healthcare staff, with approved and traceable medical product, and with a follow-up review included in the protocol.

FAQS

Frequently asked questions about hyaluronic acid

It depends on the area treated, the type of product and each patient’s metabolism. It is a resorbable material, so the result lasts for months and fades gradually. At the assessment you are told the estimated duration for your particular case and when it is worth reviewing.

The aim of the treatment is to preserve the expression and the proportions of the face. Working with measured quantities and on the right support points, the result we are after is a rested face, not a treated one.

It is a well-tolerated treatment. A topical anaesthetic is applied before the session and most products contain local anaesthetic, so any discomfort is usually mild and brief.

Yes. Mild swelling, redness or a small bruise may appear in the area during the first few days. We recommend avoiding intense exercise, extreme heat and massaging the area for the first 24 to 48 hours.

Hyaluronic acid is reversible: there is an enzyme, hyaluronidase, that dissolves it and which the doctor applies in consultation. It is one of the reasons we work with it and not with permanent materials, and also why it must always be applied by medical staff.

In density and in purpose. Filler hyaluronic acid is denser and designed to restore volume and define contours; the SkinBooster uses a low-density product that adds no volume, but hydrates the dermis and improves the quality of the skin. They address different problems and are often combined.

Yes, and it is one of the most common combinations, because they tackle different things: botox relaxes the muscles responsible for expression lines and hyaluronic acid restores volume and structure. Which comes first and how far apart is decided at the assessment.
