Pressotherapy

Pressotherapy is a sequential compression treatment that stimulates the circulatory and lymphatic systems. It improves venous return, encourages drainage and helps to reduce the feeling of heaviness, fluid retention and the circulatory component of cellulite. Available at Alta Armonía, El Albir.

What pressotherapy is and what it is for

Pressotherapy is carried out with equipment that applies controlled pressure to the limbs and abdomen through boots or belts with independent air chambers. Those chambers inflate and deflate in sequence, working from the distal area towards the proximal one — that is, mimicking the natural direction of venous and lymphatic return.

That ordered compression movement mobilises the fluid accumulated in the tissue and helps it drain, improving return circulation. It is therefore particularly indicated for tired legs, fluid retention, a feeling of heaviness and oedema, and also as support within cellulite protocols, where circulatory stagnation is one of the factors involved.

It is a comfortable session, with the patient lying down, and it is usually planned in regular cycles to maintain the effect over time. It is also used as a complement to other body treatments.

Pressotherapy is one of the body aesthetic medicine treatments at Alta Armonía in El Albir and one of the techniques used in fat-reducing and anti-cellulite treatments when the dominant factor is fluid retention. Working on the same ground is manual lymphatic drainage, by hand rather than mechanically. The schedule of sessions is set at the first consultation.

The session, step by step

1. Assessment. We confirm that what predominates is fluid retention and not something else, and contraindications are ruled out: there are circulatory situations in which pressotherapy is not indicated.

2. Positioning. The boots — or the abdominal belt, depending on the area — are put on over comfortable clothing. There is no need to undress.

3. Sequential compression. The chambers inflate and deflate section by section, always in the direction of return, following the natural movement of the lymphatic system. The sensation is of firm pressure rising and falling.

4. At the end. Normal life straight away. It is common to feel your legs lighter when you stand up.

It is one of the most comfortable treatments at the centre and fits well into a broader protocol. The schedule is set at the first consultation.

When retention is not the main problem

Pressotherapy works on retained fluid. When what lies underneath is a fat deposit or a loss of firmness, on its own it falls short, and that is the most common cause of disappointment.

That is why the assessment establishes what predominates before choosing. If there is a fatty component, the plan adds Vanquish o body mesotherapy; if there is laxity, Exilis; and if the aim is to treat cellulite as a whole, it is planned within the protocol of fat-reducing and anti-cellulite treatments.

And one difference worth being clear about: pressotherapy is mechanical and automated; manual lymphatic drainage is manual and allows work on areas and manoeuvres a boot cannot reach. They do not compete, they complement each other.

Behind every treatment there is a particular team and particular premises: you can get to know them on the page about the clinic.

Why choose pressotherapy at Alta Armonía

It is one of the treatments of reference when the reason for the consultation is tired, swollen legs or a feeling of heaviness at the end of the day.

The sequential compression follows the natural path of the lymphatic system, helping to mobilise retained fluid.

The session is carried out lying down and you can return to your usual activity immediately afterwards.

It works well as a complement to other body techniques within a plan defined in consultation.

FAQS

Frequently asked questions about pressotherapy

The session is carried out lying down with the equipment placed on the areas to be treated. The specific duration and the recommended frequency are given at the assessment, according to the objective.

No. The sensation is of progressive pressure and massage, and the level of compression is adjusted to each patient’s tolerance. Most describe it as a relaxing session.

As its effect is cumulative, it works better in regular cycles than in isolated sessions. The schedule is set in consultation according to whether you are after a one-off effect or maintenance.

Yes. It is a common complement to cellulite and body remodelling protocols, and it is scheduled alongside the rest of the plan at the initial assessment.

Pressotherapy is mechanical compression through air chambers, comfortable and reproducible session after session. manual lymphatic drainage is carried out by a practitioner with specific manoeuvres and reaches areas and nuances the equipment does not cover. In many plans they are combined.

No. The session is carried out in comfortable clothing: the boots or the belt go over the top.

Not in every case. There are circulatory, cardiac and other situations in which compression is not indicated, which is why a prior assessment is always carried out before the first session.
